About the Cover
Some (many) years ago, I took a wandering motorcycle trip from Tokyo to Kagoshima, Japan. On the way I stopped in Hiroshima and spent a long day strolling through the Peace Park, winding up in front of the Genbaku Dome, a UNESCO designated World Heritage site. For obvious reasons it's a somber and reflective place and not somewhere I expected to find two teenagers chatting, laughing, smoking. Their behavior wasn't inappropriate or disrespectful, but it was unexpected - an incredibly odd vision and a moving statement on the flow of time, the young and the old, the future and the past. I had to have the photograph!

I gathered up my gaijin courage and asked if I might take a couple of snaps. They agreed, playing along with me and the camera. I thanked them and we parted company.

Fast forward some (many) years to my rough, early workings on the tune "Figure This Out." The same themes I found in that Hiroshima scene seemed to be emerging in the song. I dug through the attic and unboxed the old pictures. I knew instantly that I had my cover.

In full disclosure, I ultimately had to combine two of the photos to make it fit and work as the cover. A small artistic license I allowed myself.

The cover has generated some praise and some skepticism. Praise for the thought-provoking image and skepticism regarding the use of such a sacred spot as an album cover. I consider that a win - not that I'm hoping to unseat "Sticky Fingers," but a good album cover should always generate a little controversy. That said, my intention was not a cheap thrill at Hiroshima's expense.

So there's the story. And as for my two subjects, I beg your forgiveness in allowing me use of your youthful selves and I hope that the many (some) years since our meeting have been kind.

Here are the original pictures, including one I found showing the Dome as it looked before the fateful day.

  1. elizabeth goes lyrics

    Upstairs alone the radio plays
Drowning out the sorrow of another day
That's the kind of sorrow that turns into hate
She'll wipe that mascara all over her face

Just a little tightening not loose

I can almost see her, faces in the mirror
The person that you're looking for don't live 'round here
And I was kind of distant, you would never call
I know when you fall, you really fall

Just a little tightening not loose
Tiny wisps of air that still crush you
    So I ask them

"Did you find out, did you know?"
    Now she's gone, Elizabeth goes
"Did you find out, did you know?"
    Now she's gone, Elizabeth goes

And we won't see her anymore

Book reports and timelines and trophies on the wall
Second string to second fiddle ain't much at all
And hands that used to hold you, hands that used to care
Hands that used to warm you, don't anymore

Just a little tightening not loose
"Hopeless" might not cut, but it will fucking bruise
    So I ask them

"Did you find out, did you know?"
    Now she's gone, Elizabeth goes
"Did you find out, did you know?"
    Now she's gone, Elizabeth goes

And we won't see her anymore
    We won't see her anymore

Half a fractured mess, knees up to her chest
Anger's all the rage, but anger's not to blame

"Did you find out, did you know?"
    Now she's gone, Elizabeth goes

"Did you find out, did you know?
Did you find out, did you know?"

We won't find, we won't see her
We won't find, we won't see her

And we won't see her anymore
    We won't see her anymore

  2. sarah don't you ever change lyrics

Sarah will wait by a cast-iron gate in the morning
Standing aside, he's giving her room to be, to be
He'd like to tell her what he feels, so real
For every star that shines a fool is born to kneel

Sarah don't you ever change (Sarah don't you change)
Cause I will stand here and I'll wait
But Sarah don't you ever change (Sarah don't you change)
I will not move but I'll quake

Back on the bus his eyes follow her very closely
He's watching her laugh as she runs and she sings and she plays, oh she plays
He'd like to tell her what he knows, he knows
Patience is a game to win if you don't explode

Sarah don't you ever change (Sarah stay the same)
Cause I will stand here and I'll wait
Sarah don't you ever change (Sarah stay the same)
I will stand here and I'll, I will stand here and I'll
I will stand here and I'll wait

    This ain't your Hollywood
This ain't your dream come true
    But when I drift
I always drift back to you

Sarah don't you ever change (Sarah's on her way)
Cause I will stand here and I'll wait
Sarah don't you ever change (Sarah's on her way)
I will stand here and I'll, I will stand here and I'll
I will stand here and I'll quake

Here's a word to the wise, cross my fingers hope to lie
    Don't hang around
Don't wait for signs, just wave goodbye
You've already wasted too much time
So give it up for a song, she's already
    She's already long gone

  3. still got your disease lyrics

    Feeling better I've felt worse
It ain't the cut but the scar that hurts
Hanging upside down can I go backwards if I turn around?
    It's insane
    I'm OK

Candy apple lipgloss room (candy apple lipgloss)
You heard of a vacuum or a broom? (clean, clean your room)
Every time I think you're gone, my telephone message light comes on
You're such a sweet thing (oh, yeah)
Like a bee sting (oh, no)

But here's to your sorrows and goodbyes
Here's to love with a sigh
Given the chance to be free
Standing her naked I still got your disease

    Got your disease

Feet keep walking but I'm waiting, just waiting
A million miles still faking, just faking

Hey ADD I hear this is it (hey DDA)
Them dirty fingers got that dirty itch (dirty, dirty, mmm, dirty filthy)
Still your eyes are red and black, them tears you cry ain't coming back
You're such an odd mix (that's OK)
    My little salt lick (oh)

But here's to your sorrows and goodbyes
And here's to love with a sigh
Given the chance to be free
Standing her naked I still got your disease

    Got your disease
    Got your disease
    Got your disease

Cause it's still raining on you (still raining)
And it's still raining on me
And all the other things we just don't ever change
    Same again

But here's to your sorrows and goodbyes
And here's to love with a sigh
Given the chance to be free
Standing her naked I still got your disease

    Got your disease
    Got your disease
    Got your disease

  4. KP lyrics

    She used to smoke pot
And try to be a city girl in a city that was not
    And she was kinda hot
You might not stop and stare but you're gonna watch

    Purdy, hey Purdy
This is what it is, this is what it is
    Funny it seems like yesterday

We used to share a flat
I was a third wheel cause my buddy's where it's at
    Some kind of loving thing
If love's a safe harbor then they sunked it fast

    Purdy, hey Purdy
This is what it is, this is what it is
Guess it, guess it just slips away

    Purdy, oh Purdy
This is what it is, this is what it is
    Rumblers down on the shore
    Maybe I'll see you there

    Best toss, toss these memories
Instead of whining about her, I should be worrying about me
    And give it all up
The stupid things you want to be

    She still smokes pot
I never have called her but I Google her a lot

    Purdy, oh Purdy
This is what it is, this is what it is
That's it goddamn it this is old

    Purdy, Kim Purdy
This is what it is, this is what it is
I'll meet you down at Hildy's
A hangover never sounded so good

  5. where have you been? lyrics

    Had a couple of girlfriends
    And a love or two
But they cannot point a finger
    At the likes of you

    No it wasn't your lips
    Or your train-wreck hair
You my darling I can't forget
The words you spoke when we met

"Where the fuck you been? (where the fuck you been?)
All my lonely old life (all my lonely old life)
Look at the shape I'm in (look at the shape I'm in)
    Where have your been?"

    High-voltage sighs
    Smarty-pantsy lies
    Didn't mama ever tell you
    Keep satan's mouth disguised

"Where the fuck you been? (where the fuck you been?)
All my lonely old life (all my lonely old life)
Look at the shape I'm in (look at the shape I'm in)
    Where have your been?"

She's all awkward angles and such
A skinny drink of water with a nasty right hook
Maybe I stayed maybe I was too fucking afraid

Come on, give me a break

    No it wasn't your hips
    Or your train-wreck hair
You my darling I can't forget
The words you spoke when we met

"Where the fuck you been? (where the fuck you been?)
All my lonely old life (all my lonely old life)
Look at the shape I'm in (look at the shape I'm in)
    Where have your been?"

"Where the fuck you been? (where the fuck you been?)
All my lonely old life (all my lonely old life)
Look at the shape I'm in (look at the shape I'm in)

  6. i know goodbye lyrics

I fell down and I missed the ground
    Landed next to you
I wouldn't think twice but in another life
Could've seen it through, seen it through

All I ever wanted was to fall into your bedroom and die
But I won't hold my breath
    Counting the regrets
    It's easier just to lie

    I know, I know, I know goodbye
    I know, I know goodbye

    Memories are for losers
Dreams that never done much move me
I bet you don't remember my name
But your window it was cold
With the Mats' "don't tell a soul"
In your room and on your radio

All I ever wanted was to fall into your bedroom and die
But I won't hold my breath
    Counting the regrets
    It's easier just to lie

    I know, I know, I know goodbye
    I know, I know goodbye

    Just like that I'm gone
    Just like that I'm gone
    Just like that I'm gone

    I know, I know goodbye

Hair hanging down on your face is a mess
Cigarettes hang in the taste on your breath
Give me the word and I swear that we'll never look back

Mouth is dry lips are cracked
    Leaving your face somehow trapped
Between a smile and tears in a perfect photograph

All I ever wanted was to fall into your bedroom and die
But I won't hold my breath
    Counting the regrets
    It's easier just to lie

    I know, I know, I know goodbye
    I know, I know goodbye

    Just like that I'm gone
    Just like that I'm gone
    Just like that I'm gone

    I know, I know goodbye

  7. unlikely toy lyrics

Trace your fingertips around her open lips
    And slide down
Lick the sweat away this is a paradise mine
    Child

    Ceiling fan
    She's seen this one before

    Such an unlikely toy
    Oh, such an unlikely toy
    The world don't see me

My wife don't understand me the way you understand me
All my sacrifices this ain't no trade it's ecstasy
Ecstasy? That's a kiss she ain't felt yet

    Such an unlikely toy
    Oh, such an unlikely toy
    The world don't see me

    Is it my skin?
Or when you get it in that you love? she says
Butterfly's fist, mosquito's dirty kiss I'll die of
    (Granny I miss you)
Mama I want to go home

    What scares me the most
My memories are ghosts I don't dream of
    Tattoos and bedbugs
The sky's just the streetlight above

    Such an unlikely toy
    Oh, such an unlikely toy

(My wife don't understand me the way you understand me)
    Oh, such an unlikely toy
(What scares me the most memories are ghosts that I don't, don't don't dream of)
    Oh, such an unlikely toy

  8. small potatoes lyrics

They say you're the one in the prose of your words
    Your face is a verse
But when push comes to shove
Would you tell me where that hot air it all goes

Cause I swear I ain't never seen you crack a smile
Or get a little out there just for fun
Let's all bend over for your life's great art project
On your future we should bet
What's above us we don't get - No!

I never really ever got what you said
Carpet bombing every word from your head
And on and on and on and on you go
    Big cheese dinosaur
    Small Potatoes

A sloe gin fizz slowly melts in your hand
As your head takes a dip
Last thing I saw as I reached for the door
Was your face and split lip

Rock n roll was gonna always let you do what you please
Instead of getting in your blood it cut you off at the knees
And every thing everyone that you ever said you'd love
Wound up like a cigarette butt
Stomped out on your hotel room rug

Little excuses lots of big extremes
Carpet vomit spewing chunks like it's speech
And on and on and on and on you roll
    Give me two aspirin
    Small Potatoes

I'm so sick and tired about it
All the words you spoke or maybe shouted
It just don't mean that much to me
Is it all bullshit or Honesty?

I'm so sick and tired about it
I'm so sick and tired about it
You call it envy, I suppose
I like to call you a self-licking ice cream cone

I never really ever got what you said
I never really ever got what you said
And on and on and on and on you roll
    I got your answer
    Small Potatoes

  9. figure this out lyrics

Billy grew up living what he knew
Following footsteps to a flag that flew above
He kissed his wife and he held his son
As he stepped up into gunship Mud, Sky, and Blood

Fool me once you fucking assholes
It's easy to rule from within god's castles

But if you figure this out let me know
I got some b-sides we can throw on
Figure this out, what a change
What was up is often in between

Skinny always wanted just to make it on her own
She went out looking for that Malibu gold
Careful what you wish for, your wishes won't last
Instead of taking Hollywood she takes it up the ass
    Doesn't cry, doesn't laugh

But she remembers mama pulling that nightgown over her head
She keeps that in her mind as she puts her face down in to the bed

But if you figure this out let me know
I got some b-sides we can throw on
Figure this out, what ain't changed
What was up is often rearranged

    I don't remember what I was told
Words often spoken to the young from the old
Fall like broken rubble from rusted bone

    Billy came home somewhat incomplete
Skinny died long before her heart stopped to beat
Disposable people, maybe you and me

But if you figure this out let me know
I got some b-sides we can throw on
You figure this out, what a change
What was up is often rearranged

Figure this out let me know ...

  10. twisted and broken lyrics

    What about your morning after?
What about your great big fall?
Well I don't really remember, remember it all

Sober here is life without you
    Crystal clear and no regrets
But somehow when I walked away I lost a step

    But I remember you there
Standing with your head down low
But it was you I knew who'd give the most

And now I'm thinking about you whoa
    Nothing really matters much
So to you my friend I'll raise a toast

Here's to you and to me and to everything that seemed so wide open
    Now twisted and broken

    Another song and a drink
    Leaning over the bathroom sink
You must be joking, oh, I'm not joking

Broken hearts and empty beer cans
Stupid fucks gone 'round the world
    Travelling in my own footsteps
    'Round and 'round

Days I lost to nights spent with you
Words I had but never got to
Coming clean ain't what it used to be

    But I remember you there
Standing with your head down low
But it was you I knew who'd give the most

And now I'm thinking about you whoa
    Cause nothing really matters much
So to you my friend I'll raise a toast

Here's to you and to me and to everything that seemed so wide open
    Now twisted and broken

    Another song and a drink
    Leaning over the bathroom sink
You must be joking, oh, I'm not joking

    Oh, twisted and broken

    I don't know what's happening to me
Sometimes I just come home from work and I don't even turn the lights on
I just sit there in the dark for hours staring into space
    Thing is, I enjoy it

    I enjoy it

  12. bus bound for nowhere lyrics

It's in the motion, the swaying that tears us apart
Road to tire and tire stays on the mark
Pavement as gray as the sky
A bird that is lost can still fly
    Shutup ms. nothingtodo
But now I wish I were there with you

And it's 16-odd hours on a bus bound for nowhere today
16-odd hours on a bus bound for nowhere today
    Wishing I had stayed

It's not that I'm driving, I'm done with deciding on you
You got your little worlds I got a mouthful of truth
    So you been fooling around
    Yeah, I've covered that ground
Stuck on mistakes that we made
Well catch your breath cause it's too late

And it's 16-odd hours on a bus bound for nowhere today
16-odd hours on a bus bound for nowhere today
    Wishing I had stayed
